AAFP Foundation

History

Since the founding of the American Academy of Family Physicians in 1947, the need for a charitable institution that could administer and accept funds dedicated to general practice (now Family Medicine) had been apparent.

The Beginning -- Established in 1958, the AAFP Foundation was created to support research on the economic aspects of general pracice. Learn how the foundation has grown through each decade.
1960s -- Learn about the Foundation's efforts in the 60s to establish Family Medicine training programs.
1970s -- The foundation launched its first fundraising campaign and helped coordinate activities within Family Medicine.
1980s -- The Foundation began looking for Corporate support of its programs and established individual state chapter foundations.
1990s -- The Foundation expanded its development efforts in new ways.
Today -- As the Foundation enters its next half-century of operation, we celebrate our distinguished past and look forward to our promising future.
