AAFP Foundation

2009: At A Glance

Thanks to you, the philanthropic work of Family Medicine — and the people it touches from patients to physicians to colleagues around the world — enjoyed a strong and significant year in 2009.

Before we get too far into the new year, let’s reflect on some of the initiatives and programs your AAFP Foundation delivered in 2009:

• Our research grant programs, including JGAP, funded 13 Family Medicine studies (nearly $200,000).

Center for International Health Initiatives had 160 participants for the 2009 meeting.

• 125 scholarships were provided for residents and students to attend the National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Medical Students.

Family Medicine Interest Groups were funded at 87 medical schools. The virtual FMIG Web site has received more than 65,000 visits.

• The consumer web site, Familydoctor.org, was translated into Spanish with the Foundation’s help.

• 2009 Physicians With Heart, in the war-torn Republic of Georgia, provided assistance to more than 400 children in the area, trained area physicians in practice management and delivered $7 million in medical supplies.

• More than 47 Constituent Chapters were involved in the AAFP Foundation-funded Tar Wars program. More than 100 kids and adults attended the 2009 Tar Wars National Conference in DC, where they made more than 50 Capitol Hill visits.

Family Medicine Philanthropic Consortium awarded 22 grants to Constituent Chapters and Chapter Foundations totaling $117,000 — the most ever thanks to your Dues Check-Off donations.

Recently our strength was noted by Charity Navigator, an online resource that evaluates the financial health of charities nationwide. This impressive achievement should instill further confidence in the good work of your AAFP Foundation.
