AAFP Foundation selected as Charity of Choice

For the second year in a row, Novo Nordisk has selected the AAFP Foundation as their charity of choice. During this year's Assembly in Boston, Novo made a donation to the Physicians With Heart (PWH) Children’s Project for every physician visitor to their booth. The goal, to raise over $10,000 for this year's PWH airlift to the Republic of Georgia, has been surpassed with Novo’s donation of $13,000 to the AAFP Foundation. More information about PWH.

World Pneumonia Day - November 2, 2009

In support of World Pneumonia Day, more than 60 organizations (including international NGOs, faith-based groups, academic and medical institutions, and others) from countries around the world, have joined the coalition to raise awareness of pneumonia related deaths. Events supporting World Pneumonia Day are being organized across six continents, including a Global Pneumonia
Summit in New York City, a National Press Conference in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a Walk for Pneumonia in Abuja, Nigeria, and more.

What is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs. The disease can range from mild to severe, and in some cases may be fatal. Pneumonia can be spread in numerous ways, the most common being airborne droplets from a cough or sneeze.3

What are the Symptoms of Pneumonia?
People who have pneumonia often complain of coughing, fever, shortness of breath and chest pain.4 Complications of pneumonia may include bacterial infection in the bloodstream and fluid and infection around the lungs.4

Which Adults are at Risk?
Despite common assumptions that only older people get pneumonia, it can actually occur at any age. While adults over 65 are at highest risk for pneumonia, those with underlying persistent conditions,5,6 including heart disease, diabetes and asthma are also at risk.6

Tips for a Healthy Lifestyle
Healthy living habits are important and include:
• Washing your hands frequently7
• Covering your mouth when you cough7
• Not smoking7
• Maintaining a healthy diet7
• Exercising regularly7
• Drinking alcohol in moderation7
• Getting enough sleep7
• Going regularly for health check-ups7
