Charitable remainder trusts irrevocably transfer property, such as cash, securities or real estate in trust to the AAFP Foundation. An outside trustee safeguards and manages the assets in the trust so that the income from the trust can supplement the donor's current income. A charitable remainder trust is appealing because it offers higher income potential than the income produced in an annuity without touching the principal. After your lifetime, either the assets in the trust belong to the AAFP Foundation or the AAFP Foundation can receive the income stream that the trust produces. If you are interested in establishing a charitable remainder trust, you should consult with your attorney, accountant or other qualified professional for advice on estate and tax planning.
