Past Foundation Leader Passes Away After Life of Service

Dr. James Gordon Price, who served on the AAFP Foundation (formerly the FHFA) Board of Trustees from 1970-1982 and on the Board of Curators for the Center for the History of Family Medicine from 1993-1996, passed away on October 17, 2009.

Originally from Colorado, Dr. Price practiced Family Medicine there from 1952 to 1978. In 1978, he became a professor at the University of Kansas Medical School, eventually becoming Executive Dean of the medical school in 1990. After retirement, Dr. Price volunteered at free clinics in the Kansas City area and on the island of St. Lucia.

Dr. Price was also an AAFP leader, serving as President of the AAFP in 1973-1974 as the AAFP made major efforts to include students, residents and members of the Armed Forces as partners on AAFP Committees. Dr. Ross Black of Ohio says of Dr. Price, “his smile, encouraging words and listening ear were the attributes which made him loved by his patients and admired by members of all ages and experiences. He engendered leadership development and active participation which led to further transitions and actions within the AAFP over the ensuing years."

Dr. Price also served as Vice Speaker and Speaker of the Congress of Delegates. He was a charter diplomate and President of the American Board of Family Practice (now ABFM) in 1979. He was a friend and mentor to many, and embodied the values of Family Medicine.
