Physicians with Heart (PWH) is a collaboration between the AAFP Foundation, the AAFP, and Heart to Heart International. Since its inception, airlift projects have helped people in the former republics of the Soviet Union and in Vietnam.
2008 Physicians With Heart Airlift:
The 2008 Physicians With Heart Airlift took place October 16 - 23, 2008. The 25-member delegation visited the Republic of Kyrgyzstan. The delegation made an impact on physicians in Kyrgyzstan by sponsoring a family medicine symposium and providing much-needed pharmecueticals. In addition, the delegates made visits to two boarding schools through the Children's Project where they provided a new heating unit and hearing aids for children in need. 2007 Physicians With Heart Airlift:
In 2007, the 35-member delegation included 22 family physicians, family members, Foundation and AAFP staff, and guests from various industries.
Not only did volunteers accompany $6.4 million worth of medical aid from pharmaceutical and medical supply companies, but they presented family medicine educational symposiums to more than 160 physicians. The team visited clinics, conducted rounds with Tajik family physicians, consulted on cases, and saw firsthand the enthusiasm for family medicine in Tajikistan.
More than 350 Tajik children benefited from the Children’s Project through donated supplies such as towels, linens, hats, hygiene items, vitamins and school supplies. The Foundation provided funds for the Dushanbe Day Care Center for the Disabled to renovate their toilet facilities for wheelchair accessibility. The volunteers also painted a colorful mural in the commons area of one institution and donated new wheelchairs.
