2009: Enhancing Health in the Republic of Georgia
The Physicians With Heart partnership returned to the Republic of Georgia at the request of the U.S. State Department. A delegation of volunteers accompanied an airlift of medical aid and conducted educational sessions on the practice of Family Medicine.
About the Republic of Georgia
Situated between Europe and Asia along the Caucasus Mountains, the Republic of Georgia is still recovering from recent civil unrest over the regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russian forces continue to occupy these regions - forcing nearly 400,000 people to evacuate the area amid the fighting. The Physicians With Heart delegation focused on more stable regions in the south, near the capital city of Tiblisi and Gori.
Health Care and Medical Education
The Georgian health care system is at a crossroads. Some government officials are calling for widespread infrastructure reforms, including the universal privatization of all health care. These reforms have met resistance, as others seek a private/public compromise and still others want the government to provide all health services. The Ministry of Health, the Georgia Family Medicine Association and others are called upon the PWH delegation to help them prepare for these reforms by training family physicians in family-practice management and health care administration.
The Children's Project, a companion program to Physicians With Heart, provides needed items to children in orphanages, institutions, schools or hospitals in the recipient country. The 2009 Children's Project made a big impact in Georgia, making several improvements to schools that housed military troops during the Russian invasion.
