At free health clinics around the country, newly unemployed Americans are joining others in line and in need: The coronavirus is creating both medical and economic challenges. To help address the crisis, The Humana Foundation is awarding a $1 million grant to the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation. The funding will provide emergency and general assistance for free clinics supported by the AAFP Foundation’s signature humanitarian program, Family Medicine Cares USA.

“The value of The Humana Foundation’s generous grant can’t be overstated,” said Julie Anderson, MD, president of the AAFP Foundation. “Family physicians at free health clinics want to provide our underserved populations with dignity in care, and the best care, at all times. The need is great, and it’s even larger now than it was before.”

The $1 million grant to the AAFP Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund is part of The Humana Foundation’s overall $50 million commitment to coronavirus relief and recovery efforts.

“As the COVID-19 health crisis continues throughout our country, it is exposing daily challenges for Americans, and many are struggling,” said Walter D. Woods, CEO of The Humana Foundation. “With this funding, we will help individuals and communities address immediate needs related to health care, food, and employment.”

Donations to the AAFP Foundation’s COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund can be marked for a specific area, such as the Family Medicine Cares USA clinics, or applied to the most-pressing need. Donations can be made at aafpfoundation.org/covid19relief.
