• A year-long program with lifelong impact, the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute (ELI) helps ensure the future of our specialty by increasing the number of future family medicine leaders and providing the training sessions needed to help them succeed.

The work wouldn’t be possible without volunteers – family physicians and others – who give of their time and expertise. And you can join the crew!

“There are different ways for speakers and mentors to be involved with the ELI program, and each approach is important,” says Christina Kelly, MD, FAAFP, and ELI project management faculty. “By sharing their expertise and personal stories, our volunteers help develop and inspire a group of students and residents who are doing important work and hopefully will continue to do that as part of the ELI program.”

Kelly says the variety of speakers involved provides a broad and valuable perspective.

“Speakers talk about everything from how to build and lead a team to how to run a successful meeting, how to engage stakeholders, and equity and leadership.”

The 30 residents and students selected for the 2022 program will attend the AAFP National Conference in July and then participate in workshops in one of three leadership tracks: Policy & Public Health, Personal & Practice, and Philanthropic & Mission-Driven. The weekend will conclude with a project management session.
