• Before I highlight a bit of what you’ll find in The Compass, I want to take a moment to express my deep gratitude for your generous and immediate response to the Foundation’s appeal for Ukraine. This was the single largest appeal response we have ever had. Contributions were quickly channeled into care: The Foundation provided financial assistance to teams from International Medical Corps and Heart to Heart International to provide essential emergency and primary health services, mental health support, and COVID-19 awareness and prevention in areas of Ukraine devastated by the fighting. Thank you for the rapid response to this manmade disaster.

Moving on to Board activities, the Spring 2022 meeting marked the first time the Board met in person for a couple of years, and it was wonderful to see each other! Along with the regular work of the Board, trustees engaged in a “blue sky” session for Family Medicine Cares International (FMCI) and considered what the program might look like in five to 10 years. If you missed how we’ve reimagined FMCI today, catch up here.

The Board also engaged in a racial equity workshop. I believe that what we learn as we view philanthropy through a race equity lens will help us move forward as an organization. Our thanks to the Rooted Strategy organization for helping to guide our discussions and broaden our perspectives. Their input was invaluable.

Several stories in this newsletter shine a light on our specialty’s bright future. Medical students and residents will learn more about the wonderful possibilities presented by family medicine as they gather for the 2022 National Conference. Check out this story to see what a difference your support makes for these students.

The conference will also launch the 2022 cohort of the Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute. You’ll find details and a list of these up-and-coming leaders here. Are any from your area? Take a look.

Our new Family Medicine Discovers RapSDI Scholars are moving forward with projects aimed at improving two common health care issues. Check out the winning research ideas here.

This edition of The Compass also gives you a “backstage” look at some fascinating artifacts as the Center for the History of Family Medicine celebrates the 75th anniversary of the Academy and an intriguing story about two Riddles. I hope you take a moment to read and enjoy all the stories.

Again, thank you for the tremendous outpouring of support for the Ukraine appeal, and for all your generous donations. You are the source of our strength.

    With appreciation,

    Dave
