• Program Overview

The AAFP Foundation provides funding to support the Center for Global Health Initiatives (CGHI). Created in 2000, CGHI assists in the development of deliberately trained, competent, generalist physicians to meet the health needs of the community and the country.

    About the Center

CGHI’s vision is “to assist in the development of deliberately trained, competent, generalist physicians to meet the health needs of the community and country.” The underlying philosophy of this vision is that trained international consultants will provide assistance based on the universal principles of Family Medicine, tailored to the epidemiology and economy of the country, and using the best practices of Family Medicine in the United States that are appropriate for the needs of the community.

The Family Medicine Global Health Workshop offers educational sessions, facilitates networking discussions, and special events to help members expand their expertise and knowledge about how to get started in the exciting field of global health and match their interests with global health needs and efforts. One workshop to highlight is the Daniel J. Ostergaard, MD Lectureship on Global Health — also supported by a grant from the AAFP Foundation.
