The American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (AAFP Foundation) is the philanthropic arm of the American Academy of Family Physicians. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health of all people by advancing the practice and impact of family medicine through philanthropic support, leadership development, and community-focused initiatives. Our work is made possible by generous contributions from family physicians, corporations and individuals who share our vision of stronger health outcomes everywhere.

Our mission and vision

Our vision:
To improve the health of all people.

Our mission:
The AAFP Foundation advances family medicine through philanthropy, using humanitarian, educational and scientific programming to improve health.

Our impact

Through strategic priorities including health care access, awareness and value, exploration of family medicine careers and data-driven fundraising, we focus on meaningful, measurable impact.

The AAFP Foundation’s programs touch lives across the United States and around the world:

Your support directly enables these programs, helping strengthen the specialty and improve health outcomes in communities.

Leadership and governance

The AAFP Foundation is guided by a Board of Trustees composed of family medicine leaders, corporate donors and public trustees, with oversight of strategic direction and program stewardship. Board members and staff work collaboratively to ensure responsible governance and impactful use of donated resources.

We also offer leadership opportunities for students and residents—such as positions on the Foundation Board of Trustees—further engaging future physicians in organizational decision-making and advocacy.

Our history

Since its establishment in 1958, the AAFP Foundation has championed research, education and philanthropy within family medicine. Originating to support studies on the medical and economic aspects of general practice, the Foundation has grown to include humanitarian outreach, leadership programs and research grants. Over decades, donors and supporters have helped expand its reach and impact across the specialty.
