Family Medicine Cares USA
Family Medicine Cares USA provides grants for the purchase of durable equipment to help new and existing free clinics care for the uninsured in areas of need across the United States.
Launched in 2011, this humanitarian initiative helps fund free clinics in the U.S. with AAFP member physicians serving in a leadership role. Grants bestowed support new and existing clinics and provide for the purchase of durable items, such as exam tables, EHR systems and medical equipment.
As of October 2025, Family Medicine Cares USA has given out a total of 145 awards for over $2.2 M to free clinics in 41 states plus one U.S. territory (Puerto Rico).
Why free clinics?
There are over 30 million uninsured people in the United States. Existing free clinics have seen a dramatic increase in patients with the majority of these patients coming from working households. The need far exceeds existing capacity, and some areas have no free clinic access at all. Even now with the Affordable Care Act, there is and always will be an underserved population of men, women, and children who simply fall through the cracks.
