2022 AAFP Foundation Board of Trustees builds on success, plans for progress
Board members look forward to supporting talent, relaunching international program
As the world moves into the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the stress and exhaustion of health care workers makes regular headlines. Still, physicians, nurses, and others continue to show up, often going beyond what might be expected. The new 2022 board members for the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) Foundation are volunteer leaders, ready to do the work needed to improve health care for all.
“The 2022 Board of Trustees includes a diverse group, eager to continue the great work of the Foundation and our members,” says David R. Smith, M.D., MPH, a longtime Wisconsin leader in family medicine and the new board president. “In the pandemic, early career physicians have shown us how to pivot, change the way we work, and redefine how family medicine looks at the use of technology. As a board, we want to recognize and support these family medicine leaders early on, while still engaging the talent and wisdom of physicians later in their careers.”
Smith says the 2022 Board of Trustees will help the Foundation tackle the needs of patients and family physicians in the U.S. and beyond. Goals include the successful relaunch of Family Medicine Cares International, a program giving AAFP Foundation delegates an opportunity to go to the Dominican Republic, provide direct patient care, and support medical education for local doctors. The board will also work to advance the Foundation’s other signature programs.
