AAFP Foundation’s 2023 Philanthropist of the Year, Daniel Ostergaard, MD, FAAFP and Mrs. Ruth Ostergaard, RN.

The AAFP Foundation Philanthropists of the Year, Daniel Ostergaard, MD, FAAFP and Mrs. Ruth Ostergaard, RN, embody the spirit of giving back to society and fostering positive change. Their stories, deeply rooted in a sense of mission and a passion for education and humanitarian work, serve as an inspiration.

Daniel’s journey to becoming a philanthropist was shaped by his parents, who were missionaries in the poorest parts of India. Their selfless dedication to helping those in need left a lasting impression, instilling in him a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to serving others.

Ruth's philanthropic journey started when she became actively involved with Physicians with Heart, an organization that was founded in 1993 in Russia. She witnessed firsthand the impact of health care nonprofit organizations like Heart to Heart International, which provide crucial medical assistance to those in need. Her experiences abroad showed her the difference that a group of dedicated individuals can make when working together to improve the lives of others.

The Ruth Ostergaard Children's Fund was established in 2013 by an anonymous donor. This unexpected gesture demonstrated the profound impact of her work and commitment to humanitarian causes. To this day, she continues to contribute to this fund, ensuring that it reaches new locations and children in great need, such as Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Daniel summarizes the essence of philanthropy as giving one's "time, talent and treasure." His involvement with the Center for the History of Family Medicine (CHFM), where he served on the Board of Curators for six years, reflects his passion for preserving the legacy of family medicine. The Center holds the history of the American Academy of General Practice (AAGP) and the transition to today's AAFP, allowing future generations to appreciate the evolution of family medicine.

Daniel and Ruth’s contributions extend beyond financial support, as they have actively participated in humanitarian missions, sharing their expertise and compassion with those in need.

The recognition of being named AAFP Foundation Philanthropists of the Year is a testament to their commitment to improving the world with each dollar and volunteering hour. They are joined by hundreds of volunteers who are members of the AAFP, and the honor is a humbling reminder that the collective efforts of individuals can bring about positive change.

Ruth captures the significance of this recognition, describing it as a "big stamp" of approval that affirms their dedication and the value of their work. It's a reminder that philanthropy isn't just about giving; it's about the lasting impact of that giving and the difference it makes in the lives of those who need it most.
