Opportunity to donate to the AAFP Foundation

Letter from the Board President

David R. Smith, MD, MPH, FAAFP
Wooden blocks spelling the word "donate" sit on top of three stacked books.

We are a few weeks away from something I anticipate every year – FMX. I’ve attended the Family Medicine Experience (FMX) at least 25 times, and each time I look forward to the wide variety of education and the opportunity to connect with friends and colleagues. FMX is our annual gathering to ‘drink the Kool-Aid’ of family medicine, and since it’s our largest gathering of individuals with similar values and interests, it’s a perfect opportunity to share stories about what is made possible through the generosity of family physician donors and volunteers.

I’m always encouraged by the number of people attending FMX who recommit their annual gifts to the Foundation or begin giving for the first time after hearing the life-changing ways the Foundation contributes to advancing family medicine. This year, we’ve set the ambitious – but achievable! – goal of raising $100,000 during the week of Congress of Delegates and FMX. In celebration of the AAFP Foundation’s 65th anniversary, I am challenging my family medicine colleagues to show up for the important work made possible through their generosity.

My favorite part is getting to talk with family physicians who are at different stages of their careers and hear their individual stories.

It is an honor to share the Foundation’s stories of what family physicians make possible through their generosity. When you see me in Chicago ask me about supporting free clinics throughout the U.S. and serving Haitian emigrants in sugar cane fields of the Dominican Republic. Let’s talk about how you helped send hundreds of students and residents to National Conference in Kansas City this year and help mentor a Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leader Institute scholar working to prevent childbirth-related fistulas in Africa.

Members can look forward to the annual auction being extended throughout the week, an invitation-only donor recognition dinner with entertainment from The Second City comedy troupe, and lively conversation at the Foundation booth. The work you do in your communities makes the work of the Foundation possible. Stories are one of the best ways to share the impact of our meaningful work. I hope you’ll take a moment at FMX to hear a story, to share a story and to consider how you can support someone else’s story.

I look forward to seeing you in Chicago!

P.S. If you haven’t registered for FMX yet, don’t wait! You can learn more at aafp.org/cme-and-events/in-person/fmx.

With appreciation,

Dave
